HackXX Event Recap – Hamna

Recently, Hamna helped plan and host HackXX, which is UC San Diego’s women-centric hackathon. HackXX is open to undergraduate students from any academic background, gender and sexual identity, and aims to provide a space where all innovators feel welcome.

HackXX is UC San Diego’s Women-Centric Hackathon. It’s a place welcome to all genders, majors, and students. This year, we welcomed 103 hackers who identified as women, men, transgender, and non-binary, and they came from various universities in Southern California.

Participants could hack on any idea that they had. Those who didn’t have a team were invited to a Team Mixer where hackers shared their ideas for possible hacks and connected with one another.

Hackers were able to attend three different types of technical workshops. We offered workshops on Unity for VR/AR platforms, web development using Django, and learning how to CAD and 3D print! We even had a workshop on how to ace a technical interview by Northrop Grumman and a tech talk on machine learning from Cisco.

To create a safe and comforting experience, we made sure to provide the hackers with enough support to help them feel confident. Mentors were present throughout the hackathon to guide the hackers. VR Club at UCSD hosted a VR/AR station complete with HTC Vives and mentors present at all times. We also made sure to have a variety of food options available to cater to different diets.

At the end of the hackathon, we had 19 project submissions! It was great to see hackers support one another as they pitched their hacks. Our 1st place team created a website called Any-A. Their goal is to empower girls in elementary school by helping them practice math and learn about female role models and their accomplishments in the field of mathematics.

In the end, it was evident that all the teams grew together as they collaborated, learned new topics, and made amazing hacks!

Camping in Anza Borrego – Hamna

Another of our students recently went on a camping trip. Hamna spent her first camping trip in the Anza Borrego Desert and absolutely enjoyed it. Check out some of the pictures from her trip below!

I went camping for the first time ever! I went to the Anza Borrego Desert with two of my buddies, and saw the night sky in all of its glory and learned a lot about constellations. We also went hiking where I explored my first ever desert oasis. There were an enormous amount of palm trees and the calls of beautiful desert birds. I also had the opportunity to try outdoor bouldering and climbed a few large boulders. My friends and I ended our trip by exploring the world’s largest collection of mud caves. All in all, camping and exploring new places within the San Diego country was absolutely breathtaking.

Finals Week Recap – AJ

It’s a new quarter and a new year, so things at UC San Diego are relaxing… for now! Here’s a recap of two of our students – AJ and Hamna studying before finals.

Life on Warren Mall Meets: Hamna

This week we are debuting a new video series called Life on Warren Mall Meets. You have already had the chance to be introduced to our students through their blog posts, but here are a few other things you might not have known about them.

To kick off the series, we sat down with fifth year Electrical Engineering major, Hamna to discuss her passions and also her favorite coffee spot on campus. From serving as the Vice Chair External of UC San Diego’s IEEE branch to hiking on the weekends and hanging out with her sorority, it seems almost impossible that Hamna would also find time to study. Yet, she does it all and more!

Working with IEEE – Hamna

This year, Hamna is serving as Vice Chair External for the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, better known as IEEE. IEEE has more than 2,350 student branches and colleges and universities in 80 countries. With its global membership, the IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace systems and computers to biomedical engineering and consumer electronics among others. The UC San Diego IEEE is the second largest branch in the United States.

Here’s what Hamna was up to this November with her IEEE team!

Meet the Students – Hamna

Today meet Hamna!

I’m Hamna. I’m a fifth year undergraduate student studying Electrical Engineering. I’m passionate about using knowledge and empathy to help others. I enjoy reading books on topics covering the whole spectrum. I love to SWEAT! Whether it is doing yoga, hiking, running, or climbing, I love a good challenge to improve my strength and balance. I hope you enjoy the content I’ll be sharing with you all. Come and get a glimpse of my crazy, fantastic life!
